In 1962, Jacques Brel sang of a flat country with low skies and North Sea winds, and he loved it precisely for what it lacked.
Un pays pas si plat responds to him with twelve Belgian artists who show that this same country has much more relief than the horizon suggests. Apart from the country they share, there is no theme, and that is a deliberate choice. The exhibition is conceived as a collection, not as a thematic argument. Here, art is displayed as it should be in a home: not grouped by artist, but brought together. Works that seek each other out, speak to one another, and precisely because of that reveal their individuality.
Brel loved the plains; these twelve advocate for relief.
