I want to take forgotten parts of the everyday landscape out of their context and see what happens when they become the star.
Guust Mathys (°2001, Belgium) is a young artist with a Masters Degree from the LUCA School of Art (Ghent - 2025) in painting.
For his graduation show, he made an installation of pigeons, made out of canvas and painted with oilpaint - extracting an everyday scenery from its context and by placing it inside, creating a whole new reality and interaction with its viewers.
In the words of the artist:
I am always looking for: What makes a landscape special to me. What do I pay attention to? How much space can a painting take up? Does a painting have to hang on the wall?
I find it interesting how a sculpture can open people's imagination to see the space around it differently. How can a work change the space in which it stands? How much work is needed to change a space? Can you make a tree out of canvas and paint? How much canvas would be needed? How much time?
I want to take forgotten parts of the everyday landscape out of their context and see what happens when they become the star. How do people react to something when it is in a gallery as opposed to when they encounter it on the street? How do I react to it?
